Recently I was having lunch with a male friend. The conversation turned to the book He’s just not that into you. My friend, P., mentioned that he doubted the book’s legitimacy, and he, in fact, was diametrically opposite from the men depicted in the book.
Me: Really, how so?
P: Well, I actually only date women who I don’t like very much. It’s easier if they leave.
Me: What do you mean?
P: (defensively energetic) I don’t want to be brokenhearted by someone!
Me: So, in order to counter this you only stick with women who you won’t be sad to see go.
P: Yep.
Me: Hmm.
P: Like, if I have a good date or a couple of fantastic dates, or I really like someone I’m seeing: it’s time to end it. Get out before they do. That’s what I always say. (Begins to chew.)
Me: Wow, that’s kind of sad. I’m glad I never dated you.
P: (Quizzicall ) Do you want to? I mean, I know we’re not that into each other.
Me: No. (pause) Eat your sandwich.
P: (Continues chewing.)
